The Most Important Consideration In Horse Racing Handicapping

Horse racing handicappers often wonder what is the most important thing I should look at when I am handicapping a race? What do you think is the first and most important thing you need to know when you look at a runner? Some people will say, form. Other people will say class while still others will say connections. Well those are all important considerations, but they don't amount to a hill of beans unless you know one thing.

Whether you know it or not, many trainers only actually intend to win a small percentage of the races they put their horses in. Even a good trainer with a 20% win average may actually intend to win half the races he or she enters runners in and yet, the public bet those horses down in every race because they don't know what is going on in the trainer's mind. For instance, is the trainer trying to condition the horse in some way? Or maybe the trainer is actually just running the horse to keep the owner happy and realizes the beast hasn't a chance to win the race.

There is a group, however, who do know what the trainer intends for that runner. They are the connections, horse owners and employees of that trainer. If you are a trainer of a public stable you have to keep your owners happy or they will soon take their horses to another trainer. Owners. like anyone else around horse racing, love to cash winning tickets and feel privileged with inside information. They have to have some way to justify those bills for hay, oats, and vets.

But how can you, an outsider, know what the trainer intends? Many people say you have to look at the tout board, and that is part of the story, but just seeing how much is bet on a horse only tells you how much is bet on the horse, not who bet it and what they know. To really know what the trainer intends you have to think like a trainer and see what he or she has done with that runner in the past.
